Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights. It symbolises the spiritual “victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance”.
In the very old Indian language, Sanskrit, Diwali (Deepavali) means “row of lamps”. During the holidays people light lamps to decorate their homes in the evening, lighting up the darkness to welcome guests into their homes.
Diwali is celebrated by cooking up a feast and sharing a special meal with family and friends dressed in their new clothes.
To mark this happy occasion and the first year of In Anita’s Kitchen in November 2023 , the Village Hall in beautiful Kirtlington was the venue for a sold out Diwali celebration evening. Fairy lights twinkled, tables glowed in candlelight and the aroma of the celebration Indian menu filled the air.
Once sated guests were entertained by a trio of Bollywood dancers from London displaying energetic, rhythmic and colourful routines. The enthusiasm of the dancers and the lively music was infectious and soon guests were up and dancing following the lively dance routines!
The evening was filled with so much laughter and fun that as the evening came to an end, all the guests left with big smiles and the same request on their lips "Please make the Diwali celebrations an annual event in Kirtlington!"
I aim to please my guests and so in 2024 I was happy to add an extra date for the Diwali celebrations!
